Ciudad (pob., est. 2001: 1.256.900 hab.) del centro-oeste de Rusia.

En 1721 se estableció en el lugar una fundición de hierro y, en 1722, una fortaleza, llamada Catalina en honor de la emperatriz Catalina I. Se desarrolló como centro de fundición de hierro de toda la región de los montes Urales, y cobró después mayor importancia gracias a la construcción de una carretera (1783) y del ferrocarril transiberiano. Se hizo tristemente famosa por ser el lugar en que los bolcheviques mantuvieron prisioneros y ejecutaron al zar Nicolás II y su familia en 1918. En 1924 se le dio el nombre de Sverdlovsk en honor de Yákov Sverdlov. La ciudad recuperó su denominación original después del colapso de la URSS (1991). Es un importante centro industrial, productor en especial de maquinaria pesada.
